Ten years ago I was diagnosed with GERD for chronic throat clearing and went on medications at that time. Over the years the condition would improve and then get worse. In December it started getting so bad that I felt that I could not breathe - and it was unrelenting. I could not eat without serious effects. Finally, in May (after doubling my meds without success) I went to a gastroenterologist and he determined that I did NOT have GERD, he felt the throat clearing was stress-induced. I had heard about breathing retraining a few years before and noticed on a list of symptoms of hyperventilation was “throat clearing continuously”. I read all that I could online and started doing breathing exercises on my own. In a week or two, my symptoms were subsiding. By the end of the summer, I was 80% better but could not progress further. I had contacted Eugenia with some questions and her quick helpful response was most welcome. I decided to travel to Minnesota to work with her. Our sessions were amazingly helpful. My throat clearing is much better. I had been sleeping 9-10 hours a night, now I feel great on 6-7 hours of sleep and my energy level is extraordinary (I am 65 and do several hours of exercise a day). In the evenings I used to be very chilled, even in the summer, now my body temperature stays consistent throughout the day. My blood pressure has normalized. I found the breathing retraining course about three months ago, being absolutely desperate with declining health. I couldn’t breathe through my nose literally for months; sinus infections have become a vicious circle where repeated courses of antibiotics and steroids would lead to more infections and more antibiotics and steroids. I was in a never-ending cycle of illness, and it seemed like any treatment offered by doctors wasn’t effective. I tried supplements, did saline rinses every day, but it wasn’t any significant help. I’ve developed asthma, anxiety, and extreme fatigue. I have always been an energetic person, being a successful business owner and having a family. Now I felt like my health was spiraling out of control. I was getting breathless with the slightest exertion. I am in my sixties and have had asthma for forty (!) years. I took Eugenia's course about a year ago because my brother recommended it to me. He was an asthmatic too, and had a significant reduction in symptoms after learning the Buteyko Method from the book. Before the course, I was on preventer steroid medication and long-acting bronchodilator daily, and still had asthma symptoms and used a nebulizer. For the first weeks of breathing practice, it was not easy going, but I continued nevertheless, and now I feel substantial improvements. I was off one of my asthma medications almost right away, and slowly tapering off another (with my doctor's approval). I haven’t had to use the rescue inhaler or the nebulizer in a long time. I traveled recently, and travel often aggravates my symptoms, but I was just fine this time. I found that breathing exercises not only help my asthma, but are meditative and calming, which helps with everyday stresses.
